Frequently asked questions

It’s very common to have questions about moving into residential aged care.

Is there a difference between residential aged care and a nursing home?

Both terms are used for a care home where residents can have round the clock personal support and nursing care. A residential aged care home can be ideal for people who find it difficult to keep living at home, as we provide a safe environment and a wide range of services including personal care, meal preparation, organised social activities, transportation and more.

Can I access government subsidies for aged care?

The Australian Government may be able to provide financial assistance for aged care services like residential care and home care, depending on your circumstances. You can arrange a free aged care assessment to see which types of care could be suitable for your needs.

Why move into an aged care home?

There are a number of reasons someone might move into residential aged care in Brunswick, Victoria:

  • A higher level of care: Aged care residents gain access to 24/7 professional nursing and support staff, which helps to ensure every medical and personal need is met. At Aurrum Aged Care Brunswick this means personalised care and attention for each resident.
  • Safety and security: Aged care facilities like Aurrum Aged Care Brunswick are designed to provide a safe and secure environment for residents. This is ensured through features like handrails, ramps, accessible features and emergency call systems.
  • Social interaction: Residents can enjoy dynamic social lives when they join a residential aged care community. Our dedicated lifestyle team arranges an evolving calendar of aged care activities at our Brunswick aged care facility: ranging from arts and crafts, to fitness, to outings and cultural celebrations.
  • High quality dining: If it has become more difficult to grocery shop or cook at home, then residents can access reliable, delicious and nutritionally balanced aged care meal services with a move into residential aged care.
  • Access to amenities: Aged care facilities like Aurrum offer beautiful surroundings that are lovingly maintained. Our aged care residents can enjoy many shared areas, landscaped gardens and recreational spaces.
  • Relief for caregivers: Sometimes a move into aged care can provide much-needed relief for caregivers and family members. Carers can have peace of mind their loved one has all the care and support they might need.

What should I know about before moving to aged care?

Before moving into a Brunswick aged care facility, there are a few important aspects to consider:

  • Downsizing and organising belongings: We provide almost everything to make moving in easy, so downsizing can often be part of the moving in process. Residents are very welcome to bring their favourite belongings to feel at home.
  • Financial planning: It helps to understand the costs associated with aged care and enquire about any government subsidies or financial assistance available to you. Read more about moving into aged care on the pension.
  • Emotional adjustment: There’s always someone who can provide reassurance and companionship, including staff, residents, family and friends. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you feel unsure about anything.

How can I deal with moving into aged care?

Moving into aged care can be a big change, and it’s only natural to feel some apprehension. One of the best ways to ease the transition is to visit the aged care home beforehand, so you can feel familiar with the people and surroundings and ask any questions you might have. We encourage you to visit Aurrum Aged Care in Brunswick Victoria and experience the amenities at a time that suits.

It can also help to involve family and close friends in the process of moving in. This can include organising and packing belongings, and planning for regular visits from loved ones. Our care team at Aurrum Aged Care Brunswick is here to help with guidance and a friendly conversation at any time.

And of course, making the most of our lifestyle program and shared spaces can be a great way of feeling at home. We can help you to get involved in activities you’re interested in, to get to know other residents, and to live your life the way you want to.

How do you manage medication and other medical needs?

Aurrum Aged Care offers 24-hour, seven days a week nursing care to ensure that each resident’s medical needs are met. We keep medication requirements up-to-date on each resident’s tailored care plan.

Can you help with setting appointments with health professionals?

Yes, certainly. We can assist residents and their families to set appointments with healthcare providers as required. Our residents also have access to a wide variety of allied health support services as part of our person-centred approach to care.
